Proven Ways to Get Blog Traffic (and Attract the Right Readers)

It’s easy to hit publish on your website (or first blog post), kick back and wonder… where is everyone? If you want proven strategies for how to drive traffic to your blog—or company website—then you’ve come to the right place.
1. Be Strategic About Your Content
If you want to increase blog traffic, the best thing you can do is quite simply create better content. You’ve probably heard this before – the term “content is king” is thrown around more than a funnel at a frat party. But creating “better content” isn’t just about quality. It also means being more strategic with your content marketing efforts.
The most successful content is the kind that meets a specific need. Think about your audience and what they love. Content these days almost always falls into one of two categories: cool and funny or useful and educational. Choose either and you’re probably off to a good start.
If you need ideas, check out Quora and see what questions are being asked that relate to your industry subject. Also try using Buzzsumo to see what others have written about in your field, then make something even better.
2. Optimize Your Content for Long-Tail Keywords
If your site already has a high domain authority (DA), you don’t have to worry about this step. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, domain authority is a search engine ranking score that ranges from 1 to 100, and it predicts how well the site will rank in result pages—it’s based on age, popularity, and size. Your brand-new blog will have a ranking around 1 (sorry), while Facebook has a ranking of 99. As you get bigger and better, your DA score will get higher.
Because your site likely has a really low score, you’ll want to do your keyword research to start targeting the most relevant terms and phrases—but don’t go for the big ones like “business ideas” because you’ll have an incredibly hard time ranking for those top-level keyword phrases early on. Instead, aim for long-tail keyword phrases, like “monthly web hosting plans” and you’ll have a better chance at ranking—fun fact: that’s a real example of a long-tail keyword I use for my blog.
3. Pin Your Post to a Pinterest Group Board
Pinterest allows you to pin on individual boards and collaborate by pinning to contributor boards. The benefit of pinning to a contributor board is increased exposure. When you pin to a contributor board, your fellow contributors see the pin and so do their followers. The more members and followers a group board has, the more people will see your pin.
Here are some tips for pinning your post to Pinterest:
- Choose an interesting image from your blog post to pin
- Make sure the title of your blog post is visible on the image you choose
- Add keywords to the description
- Use hashtags, if they’re relevant
- If you mention someone in your blog post, you can @ mention them on Pinterest, too
- Pinterest will add the URL to your blog post

4. Build an Email List
Another way to build traffic to your blog is to build a mailing list. You can do this by creating an email list and building relationships. A newsletter is a strategic way to keep your readers engaged with your content and keep them coming back for more.
Many email marketing tools are available, and many of them work very well. They include features for your newsletter and can even provide a link to your blog.
Using analytics tools is essential for bloggers. They help you understand how your visitors interact with your site. You want to find out what content is the most popular, as well as which marketing strategies drove them to your site.
You can use free and paid analytics software to track your website’s traffic and see what’s working and what doesn’t. The data will help you to make better-informed decisions about your content.
Mailchimp, AWeber, MailerLite, and ConvertKit are excellent email marketing tools for building your mailing list.
5. Facebook Groups
Participating in Facebook groups are also a way to get clicks to your blog.
How this works is once you join Facebook blogging groups that focus on driving traffic to blogs, you join threads where you can share or click through to other blogger’s posts while they share or click your posts.
The unfortunate problem with using Facebook groups as a way of getting traffic is that they’re time-consuming.
Not only are they time-consuming, but the members of the group are probably not your ideal target audience anyway which won’t help grow your following in the long run.
Once they click on your site, they will leave soon after, which also increases your bounce rate.
Regardless, Facebook groups are a great free avenue for fast traffic if you’re looking for something quick in the short term.
